Red Bird’s inaugural project, in collaboration with artist Louise Manifold, began in September 2011 and opened in May 2012 in GAC. As Red Bird was in the process of shaping its own identity a multi-disciplinary, diverse collection of work emerged. Given the brief of ‘New Government’ – essentially proposing alternative solutions to socio-political problems through artistic means – the work became imbued with a sense of social consciousness. In addition to this socio-political awareness, the formalism of the Junior and Leaving Cert Art curriculum was challenged and broken, thus allowing the members to express themselves freely, outside of academic critique and assessment. In this youth orientated space of artistic freedom art forms such as fashion, web art, film, text and installation pieces were created and played with. Sample set the stage for Red Bird and established the culture of multi-disciplinary practice and playful experimentation that has carried on into all future projects. Sample Visual Arts Exhibition was funded by the Arts Council of Ireland under the Youth Ensemble Scheme.
