The collective’s second show pushed boundaries for Red Bird, with new members, new artists and a new medium to work with. In collaboration with Jonathan Sammon and Ruadhrí Brennan they set about creating a sci-fi theme video piece with the addition of CGI technologies.
From a very early stage the plot focused around one single character and from that point a plot of the grotesque, of otherworldliness and of psychological horror manifested itself. Kate McCarthy brought this nameless character to life and along with Colm Ward and Megan Travers Belong achieved the fictional narrative envisioned by the group. The realisation of Belong – filming taking place in December & January 2012/13 – demanded the skills of every member involved, with all becoming immersed in the charm of film-making. Belong was exhibited along with the work of the Galway and London based artists Cecilia Danell, Emmet Kierans in the group show Remember me (Before I forget) in May 2013. This provided additional opportunity for Red Bird to curate other works and empathise with the messages and languages of other artists.
Belong film project was funded by the Arts Council of Ireland under the Youth Ensemble scheme.
